The legendary smith of both anglo saxon & old norse lore was the son of a giant and the finest smith to ever live. Said to be the son of the giant Wade, the smith was named as the creator of Beowulf's mail shirt.
In old english lore, he is said to have been captured by king Nithad who cut his hamstrings and kept the smith in bonds to work only for him. Wayland escaped this prison when he captured the feathers from birds and forged a wing suite with which to escape, the depiction of this tale even appears on the Franks casket.
